Physical Disabilities and Toilet Design

This paper analyses the sequence of movements during a visit to the
toilet for persons with tetraplegia.
A methodology has been developed for how a motion capture system in a
full scale laboratory and simulation program can be used in the design
process where the focus is on the user with a disability.
The analysis has included video recordings of how different users carry
out the task. By analysing the video recordings with the users, the
critical elements have been identified with the help of a body map. The
analysis has resulted in the identification of nine critical steps. The
user needs, expressed as functional specifications, have been presented
in a matrix.
By using the results of the analysis and the methodology that has been
developed, the aim is that better rest rooms can be developed for people
with physical disabilities.
